Hydro-Net Project - Treatment of liquid hazardous waste containing ammonium

How can industrial wastewater be transformed from a disposal problem into a resource? In this presentation, LOBBE will show how wastewater with a high ammonium content can be treated and the ammonia it contains successfully recovered. Based on results from the pilot plant, the presentation provides insights beyond the laboratory—and shows the potential for integrating industrial residues into future material and energy cycles. The plant is part of the HydroNet project and is doing important research and development work for a regional hydrogen market in the Sauerland region.

13.25 – 13.45 pm

Closed loop by LIPS" - Alloy-specific aluminum scrap recycling for the automotive industry

The KANAL project creates a cycle for new automotive aluminum scrap using LIPS (5xxx/6xxx). Its applicability in large-scale industrial applications has been validated under real conditions with industry-standard scrap qualities and throughputs (TRL 7-8). Comparative melting tests confirmed a marketable 5xxx sorting product and a 6xxx sorting product with limitations due to the heterogeneous origin of the aluminum scrap. An essential part of the overall assessment is the ecological evaluation using LCA, which highlights the environmental potential of LIPS technology.

Wet shredding of high-voltage batteries with integrated lithium recovery

The wet grinding of high-voltage batteries such as lithium-ion batteries (LIB) improves and stabilizes process reliability, guarantees complete digestion and black mass quality, and binds emissions such as fine particles and exhaust gases. What is often overlooked is that dissolved lithium accumulates in the resulting process water. The presentation shows how this by-product can be used as a supplementary resource stream, including our own results on lithium recovery and the classification of other processes. The goal: higher recovery rates and contribution to EU requirements.

Correlations between visible properties and the chemical composition of shredder scrap particles

Correlations between visible properties and the chemical composition of shredder scrap particles: Metallic, magnetic shredder scrap particles have high material recycling potential. This study examines the extent to which visual characteristics allow conclusions to be drawn about chemical composition and can contribute to quantitative separation and targeted enrichment or depletion of alloying elements in order to improve the quality of secondary raw materials. The study is based on a comprehensive particle database evaluated using MATLAB. The results show in particular the negative influence of copper, non-metals, and composite materials, as well as the limitations of purely visual classification.

R-concrete: Future or scarce commodity?

Moderation and discussion leader:

Tobias Althoff, Branch Manager, WFZruhr e.V., Lünen

Partner:

WFZruhr e.V.

Description

The forum highlights the prospects for recycled concrete against the backdrop of regional raw material availability, market structures, and regulatory frameworks. Contributions from science and practice discuss the use of recycled concrete in precast production, the processing of mineral construction waste, and experiences with the Substitute Building Materials Ordinance. The focus is on the potential, obstacles, and strategies for an efficient mineral material cycle.

Regional availability and markets for mineral building materials

Description

The presentation deals with the availability and markets of mineral raw materials, with the aim of highlighting the importance of regional management of these material flows. First, the current status of the emergence, whereabouts, and potential availability of secondary mineral raw materials for Germany and North Rhine-Westphalia is analyzed. It then evaluates possible solutions for regional circular value creation in the construction industry in terms of opportunities and limitations.

Speaker:
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sabine Flamme
Professor, Münster University of Applied Sciences

13.55 – 14.15 pm

Recycled concrete in precast production – is its use consistent?

Description

The circular economy means using recycled materials as standard. In concrete and reinforced concrete construction, too, recycled aggregates must become the norm within the scope of manufacturers’ capabilities. According to current standards, up to 45% by volume of primary material can be replaced in precast construction without any technical concerns. J. Lehde GmbH has developed a standard-compliant solution for this without ZiE/abZ. Last year, Lehde used approximately 1,500 m³ of RC concrete, saving around 800 t of primary material and implementing projects with a 25% RC content – a step towards recyclable concrete construction.

From construction waste to building material

Description

The processing of construction waste into aggregates for reuse in concrete cannot be achieved with modern machinery alone. While the relevant provisions of immission control and waste legislation are still familiar to recycling companies, standards from European construction product law also apply. The high expectations of customers limit the choice of raw materials. The limited availability and the complex supporting processes during production make recycled concrete more valuable than its sales price.
