Food goes Powder
Under the motto ‘Food goes Powder’, we at BULK MASTERS are looking for ground-breaking innovations that revolutionise the way we consume or produce food.
Germany, as one of Europe’s largest food exporters, is facing new challenges and opportunities. The life science industry is experiencing sustained strong growth and requires continuous investment. Instant preparation and longer shelf life are just some of the many advantages that food powders offer.
With the highest concentration of food producers, NRW is an ideal location for these innovations and challenges. The ability to transport food in powder form eliminates the need for water transport, which not only brings ecological benefits but also minimises logistical challenges.
The future still harbours many challenges and untapped potential. Food powder offers scope for innovative ideas and solutions that can fundamentally change the way we eat and consume.
Young Professionals
How can your company become more attractive to young professionals? This challenge currently affects the entire process and recycling industry. Compared to industries such as tech or entertainment, these sectors often appear traditional and less innovative to young talent.

BULK MASTERS Teams
You can now apply as participants (students, engineers, developers, designers, etc.) as teams or individually as bulk masters.
Before the hackathon starts, all individual applicants will be divided into teams. A team consists of a maximum of 5 people with a wide range of qualifications.
The organiser will admit a maximum of 3 teams of 4 – 5 people per challenge. There is no entitlement to participate in the Hackathon BULK MASTERS. Legal recourse is excluded.

What is the BULK MASTERS hackathon about? FAQ
The Hackathon BULK MASTERS is an event organised by Easyfairs Deutschland GmbH with the aim of developing new ideas and concepts for the process industry together with interested participants. The hackathon will take place from 8 – 10 October 2024 at Messe Dortmund as part of the SOLIDS & RECYCLING-TECHNIK Dortmund trade fair duo. This year’s main topics are ‘Food goes Powder’ and ‘Young Professionals’.
The competition language is German.
Who can take part?
The BULK MASTERS is aimed at creative minds, innovators and/or explorers, those who like to challenge themselves and others.
It is for all those who love to take on complex challenges and develop the best ideas under time pressure. And thus contribute to developing the process industry into a more innovative sector.
The organiser reserves the right to make a selection if demand is too high.
This is what you need for participation as a Bulk Master:
- No matter what specialism and what level of experience. Whether you are a process engineer, developer, designer or marketeer. Whether training, studying or just starting out. It doesn’t matter at all. We are looking for interdisciplinary talents from all areas! After all, that’s what a hackathon is all about.
- You have a laptop ready.
- You are at least 18 years old. You enjoy developing new ideas in a team.
- Time pressure is a motivator for you.
- You are looking forward to presenting your solutions to an expert audience.

Do I have to pay a participation fee?
No, there is no participation fee. Participation in the hackathon is completely free of charge. Catering is also included during the event.

The organiser will allow a maximum of 3 teams of 4 – 5 people per challenge. There is no entitlement to participate in the Hackathon BULK MASTERS. There is no legal recourse and no participation fee will be charged. Participation in the hackathon is completely free of charge. Catering during the event is also included.

What hardware and software can I use?
Participants bring their own hardware and software, typically notebooks with software already installed. Both commercial and freely available software may be used. When using commercial software, participants are obliged to have the appropriate licences for this purpose. The organiser expressly does not provide any software.
At the same time, the challenge organisers may provide additional tools for the development of a solution. These will be communicated to the teams in advance.
Does the hackathon also take place online?
The Hackathon BULK MASTERS is exclusively an in-person event.
It takes place at the Dortmund Exhibition Centre.
Do I need to be able to programme?
NO, you don’t necessarily need programming skills! The hackathon is for students of all disciplines, engineers, developers, designers and many others who want to create something innovative in 48 hours.
Travel, accommodation and catering for participants
Catering will be provided by the organiser for the entire duration of the BULK MASTERS hackathon.
If required, the organiser will subsidise up to €300 towards the costs of travel to and from the event and overnight accommodation from 8 – 10 October 2024. A room contingent has been reserved at Hotel Moods until 2 September. The demand will be queried as part of the application.
Travelling by public transport is recommended, as there will probably be little sleep during the hackathon.
Can I also visit the SOLIDS and RECYCLING-TECHNIK trade fairs?
Yes, your hackathon ticket also includes entry to the SOLIDS and RECYCLING-TECHNIK trade fairs, which take place from 9 to 10 October. After the presentations and the award ceremony on 10 October, you will have time to visit the trade fairs.
How are the winners selected?
The total duration of the hackathon is approx. 48 hours. The individual teams will present their ideas in a short presentation (‘pitch’) to the jury and the specialist audience at the trade fair duo SOLIDS & RECYCLING-TECHNIK Dortmund.
The winning team will be selected on the basis of specific application criteria, which will be communicated to the teams in advance.
The organiser will award the winning team with the best idea with attractive prize money: €10,000 for first place, €3,000 for second place and €1,000 for third place (maximum number of participants per team is 5 people. The prize money will be divided among the participants of the winning team).
Publications
By accepting these terms and conditions of use, participants irrevocably declare their consent, without separate remuneration, to the material recorded by them in image and sound during the BULK MASTERS hackathon being edited, reproduced, distributed and publicly presented in whole or in part as part of reporting on the hackathon. This consent applies to all types of use in which the image/sound material is to be published for the purposes of reporting by the organiser and the challenge participants, regardless of the technology used, in particular in press releases and on the organiser’s websites and social media channels, as well as in the organiser’s internal communications (intranet).
Data protection
When participating in the Hackathon BULK MASTERS, personal data or the personal data of the team members that you or the registering team member have provided will be stored. This includes in particular the contact data from the registration.
We store, process and use this data to process the participation, preparation and realisation of the BULK MASTERS hackathon. Data will only be passed on to third parties to Easyfairs Deutschland GmbH.
If you are registering for an entire team, the person registering warrants that the other members of the team have been informed about the collection, processing, storage and use of their personal data as described here.
Rights to the solutions developed
By registering and participating in the hackathon, participants agree to transfer all rights of use to the work results (ideas developed) to the challenge organiser. The organiser receives the results of the hackathon free of third-party rights, whereby the challenge provider is free to exploit the problem solutions and their use.
