Fraunhofer IZFP: Pioneering innovative technologies

Fraunhofer IZFP, headquartered in Saarbrücken, is an internationally renowned research and development institute in the field of “sensor and data systems for safety, sustainability, and efficiency.”
In addition to custom-made sensor systems, sensor data management, data analysis, and data value creation using AI and machine learning techniques, the R&D portfolio also includes comprehensive consulting services in the field of standardization. Understanding of technical testing and sensor physics is complemented by technologies and concepts from AI research.
Decades of application and process understanding of materials and the products made from them continue to form a solid basis and provide impetus for the Fraunhofer IZFP's expanded research mission in the future: The addition of aspects of digital signal and information processing will enable novel applications in domains such as critical infrastructures, the food industry, the circular economy, and resource conservation and protection.
Traditional non-destructive testing (NDT) is increasingly evolving into cognitive sensor systems with embedded AI. These multimodal systems are becoming an essential component of the Industrial Internet of Things and support Industry 4.0. The focus is on the transformation to digitized, AI-optimized NDT solutions (NDE 4.0) that meet the growing demand for intelligent testing methods.
With its flexible testing laboratory accredited according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025, Fraunhofer IZFP has the best conditions for the rapid practical introduction of its application-oriented developments. The accreditation certifies the institute's competence – within the scope of the accreditation certificate – to validate and apply innovative testing methods, which can thus be quickly transferred to industrial applications.
