Sustainable Solutions for Sludge Storage Equipment

At SPIRAC, environmental responsibility guides our engineering approach. Our Sliding‑Frame and Live‑Bottom silo systems ensure dependable sludge flow in wastewater and industrial applications while delivering long service life and low energy consumption. Sliding‑Frame Silos / Receival Bunkers A hydraulically driven frame sweeps the flat floor and moves material toward the extraction screw. This design maximises usable storage volume and is ideal where headroom is limited or large capacities are required. Live‑Bottom Silos / Hoppers Using multiple slow‑speed shaftless spirals, these systems keep cohesive, high‑moisture sludges in constant motion. A tapered floor is essential to the live‑bottom geometry and is optimised for difficult, non–free‑flowing materials. Sliding‑Frame vs Live‑Bottom — At a Glance Geometry: Sliding‑Frame suits round or rectangular silos; Live‑Bottom works best in rectangular designs. Floor: Sliding‑Frame uses a flat floor; Live‑Bottom requires a tapered floor. Capacity: Sliding‑Frame is ideal for large volumes; Live‑Bottom for small to medium volumes. Material Type: Sliding‑Frame handles non‑free‑flowing or moderately sticky solids; Live‑Bottom is for extremely sticky, cohesive or wet sludge. Flow Mechanism: Sliding‑Frame uses a hydraulic sweeping frame; Live‑Bottom uses multiple low‑RPM spirals. Bridging Control: Good with Sliding‑Frame; excellent with Live‑Bottom. Maintenance: Sliding‑Frame has very low maintenance; Live‑Bottom remains low with no hydraulics. Cost Fit: Sliding‑Frame suits larger silos; Live‑Bottom suits smaller installations. Typical Materials: Sliding‑Frame handles dewatered sludge and woodchips; Live‑Bottom handles sludge cake and highly cohesive materials. Sustainable by Design Both systems rely on slow‑speed, high‑torque drives to reduce power use, minimise intervention, and support reliable biosolids discharge—helping operators meet sustainability and circular‑economy goals.

    13. Turn to Lock

      Turn to Lock

It is a familiar situation for designers: The space available for a closing mechanism is tight, there is no opposing surface for a latch bar or cam latch, but the closing action must be reliable and intuitive. Ganter offers ready-made solutions for such challenges, which can be flexibly adapted to individual requirements. Hook-type latches, for example. These use a different principle than a classic cam latch. Instead of a latch arm that moves behind a frame, they have a hook that engages with a mating catch by moving radially to the axis of rotation. The GN 115.8 series of hook-type latches has now been expanded – with versions in stainless steel and versions that reliably meet the requirements of protection class IP 69k. When operated with a socket key, the latches can be used even in extremely wet environments. The principle is always the same: When the socket key, bit key, knurled knob, wing knob or lever is turned by 90 degrees, the hook moves along with it. As it can be installed in either orientation, the hook will engage with either a left or right turn, making the latch easy to adapt to any situation. Thanks to its integrated lead-in chamfer, the standard part tolerates a lateral misalignment of up to four millimeters. A practical application example: Hook-type latches positioned to the side are used to lock a horizontal box lid to keep out the weather while dispensing with disruptive framing. The classic latches with cam latch are still good solutions for applications with latch arm and frame geometry. The chamfered end of the latch arm produces contact pressure when the latch arm is turned by 90 degrees, ensuring tight, reliable closure. 14. Underfloor railway scale with SysTec weighing terminal

Underfloor railway scale with SysTec weighing terminal

The raw material lime is of enormous importance to the economy. It is used in various industries — for example, in iron production and in the manufacture of plastics, glass, paper, and pharmaceuticals. Kalkwerke Oetelshofen GmbH & Co KG mines the raw material in the Osterholz quarry in Wuppertal and has highly efficient lime kilns. Lump lime or limestone powder can be transported directly from the kilns to the customers via a rail network. W&M approved processes are essential for billing procedures. For safety reasons, it is also important that the wagons do not exceed a certain target weight. Therefore, Kalkwerke Oetelshofen have their own railway scales, which were recently replaced by SysTec partner Waagenbau Dohmen GmbH with a larger scale (15 m long) and upgraded with the SysTec IT8000E weighing terminal. The railway scale is approved as non-automatic weighing instrument (NAWI). Installation process of the weighbridge Due to a new purchase of wagons by a customer of Kalkwerke Oetelshofen, the existing scales were 1.25 m too short for the longer wagons. Therefore, the existing weighbridge had to be replaced and the weighing pit extended. Due to the complicated installation situation under a loading system, the existing weighbridge could not be dismantled using cranes. The weighbridge had to be lifted using hydraulic presses and placed on cross beams. These cross beams rested on several heavy-duty rollers. With the help of these heavy-duty rollers, the weighbridge could be pulled out from under the loading station and pushed to the crane ready for loading. The crane was then able to load the old weighbridge and later lift the new weighbridge into the track bed. Benefits: - The SysTec IT8000E weighing terminal transmits the weight values to the existing ERP system via PROFINET - Robust SysTec weighing electronics for harsh environments (IP69K) - W&M approved for billing processes - High operational reliability - Durable and low-maintenance scale design
