Die Kettenbuchsen winkeln sich beim Lauf über das Kettenrad und bei zweidimensionalen Richtungsänderungen auf den Kettenbolzen ab. Kettenbolzen und Kettenbuchse werden als das Kettengelenk bezeichnet. Die Kettenrolle (von der die Kette den Namen hat) ist am Innenglied auf der Kettenbuchse montiert. Die Rolle verringert Reibungsverluste, Verschleiß und Betriebsgeräusche. Rollenketten sind die am häufigsten eingesetzten Antriebsketten.
